Transportation

Free Now & Uber
Free Now (www.free-now.com/es-en) and Uber (www.uber.com/gr/en) are among the most widely used taxi and ride-hailing apps in Greece. Available 24/7 throughout the year, they provide easy access to licensed taxi drivers across Athens via smartphone apps. Taxis booked through these platforms accept card payments.

Taxis from Athens Airport
Taxis wait at Exit 3 of the Arrivals Hall and operate 24/7. They are one of the easiest ways to reach your hotel, especially if you have luggage.
Approximate travel time & cost:
To Vouliagmeni: ~25–30 min by taxi.
To Glyfada: ~30 min.
Typical fares:
About €38–€45 during the day (approx. 05:00–24:00) and around €48–€55 at night (approx. 00:00–05:00) for a regular taxi. These flat rates are common with reputable transfer services and taxi apps, but exact amounts can vary by company, time, and traffic.
Payment:
Most local taxis do not accept cards, so it’s a good idea to withdraw cash at the airport before you ride.

Metro
Elliniko is the southern terminal station of Line 2 (the red line) of the Athens metro, serving the southern suburbs.
If you are staying in areas like Glyfada, Voula, or Vouliagmeni, it’s about a 20-minute taxi ride to the station.
From Elliniko, you can take the metro straight to the center of Athens, making it easy to explore the main sights.
Once in the city center, the metro is the fastest and most convenient way to get around.
Tickets are available for purchase at the station, and there are options for single rides, day passes, or longer travel cards.

To See

THE ACROPOLIS & MUSEUM
Athens’ top must-see attraction is the Acropolis, High City or Sacred Rock, a hill overlooking the city and home to the city’s most recognizable symbol, the Parthenon. The Parthenon is the main ancient structure on the Acropolis, a hill in the center of Athens. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the symbol of Athens and the most famous surviving structures from ancient Greece. The building was originally built in honor of the goddess Athena, the city’s patron. The museum is ultra-modern, bright and state-of-the-art.

PLAKA
Plaka will be one of the most enchanting places you visit in Athens, even though it is geared towards tourists it has retained a charm and picturesque quality. Plaka is a neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis constructed on the same site as ancient residential areas. Tourists come here for shopping and to enjoy the many good restaurants. There are outdoor cafes, many pedestrian streets, street musicians and public squares. It is a good idea to combine a walk threw Plaka with your visit to the Acropolis and its museum.

DIONYSOS THEATRE & THE ODEION
On the southern slope of the Acropolis, the pedestrian street of Dionysiou Areopagitou is the site of two ancient performance venues – the Dionysos Theatre and the Odeion Theatre of Herodes Atticas. The only way of seeing the Odeion up close is by attending a performance or from the Acropolis. The Odeion of Herodes Atticus is an important venue for the Greek festival which takes place in Summer in Athens and Epidavros.

BENAKI MUSEUM
Benaki museum is one of the great museums that Athens has to offer. The museum houses Greek works of art from the prehistorical to modern times, an extensive collection of Asian art hosts periodic exhibitions and maintains a state-of-the-art restoration and conservation workshop.

NATIONAL ART GALLERY
After a long and extensive remodel, Greece’s most important historical art gallery is now open to the public again. Situated near the metro station of Evangelismos in central Athens. The museum boasts a collection of over 20,000 priceless works of art, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, and was founded in 1878. It houses iconic works from great Greek artists like Theodoros Vryzakis and also international “Great Masters” French Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Changing of the Guard ceremonies take place at the Presidential Mansion and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is off Syntagma Square below the Hellenic Parliament. The Changing the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in particular has become a popular tourist attraction in Athens. The Evzone's, accompanied by a military band march from their barracks, just behind the Parliament Building, along the Vasilissis Sofias Avenue to the Tomb of the Unknown soldier where a ceremonial change of guards takes place every Sunday at 11:00.

CAPE SOUNION & THE TEMPLE OF POSEIDON
Go beyond Athens to the spectacular Cape Sounion, and see the ruins of the Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. Admire the views of the Aegean Sea. Many famous writers and poets have placed their signatures on this temple, marvel at the carvings left by Lord Byron, an English Romantic poet from the 1800s, and hear about the legend of Aegeus. Cape Sounion is a 69 km (43-mile) drive from the country’s capital, so you can see the sights and still be back in time for dinner. Drive on the coastal road along the Saronic Gulf from the capital through some of the city’s most beautiful suburbs, including Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Glyfada, the largest southern suburb, known for its fashionable atmosphere and upmarket boutiques and café. It is best to rent a car to enjoy the scenic drive and stop along the way to enjoy the views.
